Photo-Refractive Keratectomy

PRK, or Photo-Refractive Keratectomy, is a laser eye surgery procedure used to treat low to moderate amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. PRK is performed by removing tissue from the surface of the cornea. PRK is different than LASIK vision correction because PRK does not involve the creation of a flap to reshape the cornea. PRK's greatest advantage is that patients who are not candidates for LASIK because their corneas are too thin, may still enhance their vision.
The PRK procedure begins by numbing the patient's eye with a topical anesthesia. The thin layer of protective skin that covers the cornea, the epithelium, is removed. In less than a minute, Dr. Bruckner uses the Allegretto WaveLight laser to remove the excess tissue while reshaping the surface of the cornea.
