Surgical Reversal of Presbyopia (SRP)

Augusta, Georgia

As you age the natural crystalline lens in your eye hardens and loses elasticity. This is a natural part of the aging process of the eye and results in Presbyopia – the inability to read clearly or do close-up work without bifocals or reading glasses. Presbyopia becomes noticeable in the early to mid-forties. It is not a disease and cannot be prevented.

Some of the symptoms of Presbyopia are:

A tendency to hold reading materials at arms length
Blurred vision at normal reading distance
Eye fatigue and/or headaches when doing close work
The need for magnifying glasses for reading or other visual tasks

Presbyopia has been treated, in the past, by prescribing reading glasses, bifocals and trifocals. Another alternative, which may eliminate the need for glasses, is a new surgical procedure called SRPSurgical Reversal of Presbyopia. This patented technique involves placing four expansion bands in the white portion (sclera) of the eye. The bands allow the lens more room to flex and change shape. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and is completely reversible. SRP has also been used to treat ocular hypertension and primary open angle glaucoma, which is the second largest cause of blindness in the world.

Dr. Bruckner is an experienced ophthalmologist, who has been at the forefront of state-of-the-art vision correction techniques. He has been involved in the research on SRP and anticipates making SRP available to his patients when the FDA approves the procedure.
