Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL)

Augusta, Georgia

Implanting intraocular lenses joins a growing list of corrective eye surgery procedures available to patients. Dr. Bruckner has used intraocular lenses for years to replace the clouded lens of the eye in patients with cataracts. Now that the Implantable Contact Lens has been approved, Augusta eye surgeon Dr. Bruckner will be able to use the ICL to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses and/or contact lenses in patients with moderate to severe nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.

The ICL procedure is similar to cataract surgery. However, with cataract surgery, the lens is removed. With ICL, the eye’s natural lens is left in place and the Implantable Contact Lens is inserted through tiny openings and then positioned into place behind the iris.

Some of the main advantages of the Implantable Contact Lenses include:

  • It is removable
  • It does not permanently change the structure of the eye
  • No maintenance of the lens is required
  • It is an outpatient procedure with a topical anesthesia

Augusta eye surgeon Dr. Bruckner also offers multifocal and accommodative intraocular lenses to give his patients better vision both near and far.
